The truth about Osteoporosis

A while ago, on the advice of my doctor, I had a Dexa Scan and was disappointed that my results came back “borderline osteopenia.” Those of you who know me well know that I am an avid proponent of “alternative” therapies and nutritional supplements, and take 1500 miligrams of calcium as a part of my daily regimen. Of course, the first thing my doctor suggested was to get on one of the popular osteoporosis drugs (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, etc.). He said that he didn’t recommend one over the other – it depended on my choice of dosage, etc.

Because of my aversion to prescription medicine of any type unless absolutely necessary to save one’s life, I told my doctor that I would like to do some research before making a decision. So I got on the Internet to do some research, and that is how I found Vivian Goldschmidt and “Save Our Bones.” Vivian has researched osteoporosis, its causes and remedies and has put all the information in her book The Bone Health Revolution. In the book, she exposes a lot of the myths surrounding osteoporosis (it is not a “disease”) and the dangers of taking the remedies that we see advertised on TV and elsewhere. I didn’t know that these meds contain bisphosphonates, a chemical used in many cleaning products, that actually inhibits the growth of new bone tissue. Take a look at this FDA warning. Obviously, Sally Field isn’t telling us the whole truth about Boniva in that commercial!

In her book, Vivian also gives alternatives to prescription drugs in the prevention and control of osteoporosis, including diet and exercise. The information that I got from the book reinforced my decision to ignore my doctor’s advice and his recommendation to get on prescription drugs.

If you are concerned about bone health and considering getting on one of the foregoing drugs, or if you are already taking one of them, I urge you to take a look at  Vivian Goldschmidt’s website there is plenty of free information, and you can order her book if you choose to.
