The creation of
Ai/E10 in 1993 resulted directly from the recognition of this
problem. We need to keep our immune function vibrant so we can
respond as effectively as possible to these new challenges if we get
caught-up in one of them. The food chain is always at risk and we
need to be alert to the dangers of contaminated food. It doesn’t just
happen in apparent unsanitary places. It can happen anywhere.

traveling this summer, or anytime, it is always a good idea to increase
your daily use of Ai/E10. Remember to “think immune.”

The first 14 days of the Elance® Weight Management System is called Phase I or ‘Boot camp”. During this phase, you will not be eating sugar, grains (bread) or fruit . Rae Kamstra, our personal trainer at Body Wise®, explains below Why Boot camp is so important.

1) Reducing Inflammation.

Body Wise® Boot camp is about healing the body. Typically when people go on a fast (which boot camp isn’t) and reduce calories to irresponsibly low levels, they lose a ton of ‘water’ weight.

With boot camp we see people lose the same amount of weight as you might expect from a fast, but they’re still eating at least 1200 calories per day! How do they do it?! Well the answer is: inflammation. People are not losing 12 pounds of fat when they fast for 2 weeks, and they are not losing 12 pounds of fat when they do our program for 2 weeks either. There are many foods that cause tremendous amounts of inflammation in our bodies (that’s a bad thing), foods like sugar, processed oils and deep fried foods, processed wheat, preservatives and chemical additives. By eliminating all ‘fake food’ from our diets for 2 weeks and getting our carbs entirely from beans (remember the resistant starch that helps the intestines heal?), we are literally un-puffing our bodies from pounds and pounds of harmful and potentially serious inflammation. The great news? We do it the healthy way and we work WITH our metabolic hormones – not against them!

2) Creating new habits.

Changing our eating habits takes a lot of effort. As we have all experienced many times, it isn’t a simple matter of thinking we will make a change or two at the grocery store one day. It requires menu planning, education, and resolve. Body Wise® Boot camp is about giving ourselves the opportunity to devote ourselves to a 2 week crash-course on planning, shopping for, and eating new food. It also gives us the emotional commitment to get through that (sometimes) difficult detox effect we experience somewhere between day 3 and 5 of the cleanse. I don’t know about you, but I’ve tried many times in the past to ‘cut out’ certain foods, and I seldom made it past day 3 because I always felt sick. Now I know why! (And I’ve successfully complete boot camp 4 times!)

3) Motivation

As a trainer, I used to be adamant about the fact that people needed to accept that they didn’t put their weight on in a day and they couldn’t expect to take it off in a day either. I was fiercely opposed to any program that promised weight loss of any more than 2 pounds per week. In hindsight, I was simply uneducated on the subject of inflammation. In addition, I can’t tell you how many people gave up after working hard for 4 to 6 weeks and seeing only 5 or 6 pounds lost. It was disheartening to them and to be honest, there were not many people who stuck with it. The payoff simply wasn’t worth the effort. Motivation matters. When people see a weight loss of 8, 10, or 12 pounds in their first 2 weeks, along with a huge increase in energy AND the realization that they don’t have to starve themselves to lose weight, they feel empowered. I’ve seen dozens and dozens of people maintain great results with our program because they surprised themselves with their success – in a very positive way. As a coach, that is thrilling. As far as being confused about the eating plan, don’t worry!

You will be eating 6 meals a day….don’t panic! It’s easier than you think! These 6 meals consist of two shakes, 3 “snacks” and one main meal. When you do the shakes versus food is up to you. I find that having a shake for breakfast helps me to stay on track. Breakfast foods are usually sugar and grain! Each snack should be at least 200-250 calories. The main meal can be 300-400 calories. Another tip is to eat that main meal earlier in the day. You take 2 of the Appetite before this main meal. You should be eating at least 1200 calories a day. You should work beans into your diet at least twice a day. Don’t worry, after eating beans on a regular basis, your body actually stops the “gassy” problem.

If you are a Body Wise® member, you can log on free to the the Dare to be Slender site with your Body Wise ID and Password. Here, you will find many sample menus and recipes for both Boot Camp and Phase II or the program. At the end of this blog, I’ve posted a sample Boot Camp weekly menu – you can find recipes for most of the dishes on the Dare to be Slender website. Another advantage of being a Body Wise® member is that you get weekly menus and other healthy hints and tips by email.

Your beverages during this two week period should be water, water and more water! You should be drinking 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water per day. In addition to the water, you can have tea, hot or cold….green or herb is the best. NO SUGAR! HONEY is considered sugar! No milk, soda or coffee. With your shakes, it is recommended that you use soy milk instead of water, as you need at least 200-250 calories per meal or snack. 8 oz soy milk 8 oz ice and two heaping scoops of the powder. The longer you blend, the creamier it gets!

Don’t worry, in two weeks you graduate to Phase II, and we add back grains, fruit, etc. Hopefully, you will never want to add back the sugars and processed foods. You may feel “yucky” during the first 4-5 days of boot camp. That is normal. Your body will be cleansing . That is why we highly recommend that you add the Right Choice vitamins to your weight management program. Take 3 AMs in the morning and 3 PMs right after dinner or before you go to bed. Having the proper nutrition helps with energy and with cravings.

We suggest that you weigh in and the end of the first week and then at the end of the second week. Do not weigh everyday! Your body will be going through changes and the scale may not reflect it right away. Some people only lose 5 pounds the first two weeks, but they might also lose 2 inches!

Weekly Menu

Regardless of what phase of the system you are on, I want to show you how “un-boring” your menu can be and still be healthy and low in calories. Even if you are not trying to lose weight, try this menu for a week anyway! Also, note the full-day “weekend” menu, since that tends to be the hardest time for most of us to stick to a healthy regimen.

It’s that time again! While the long, warm days of summer transition to shorter cooler days of fall and winter, our lives tend to step up a bit, and our immune strength is often put to the test. We all tend to see a little less ‘down’ time come September, as kids return to school and everyone seems to gradually move back indoors.

Strengthen your Immune System

With the changes in temperature, increase in stress, and closer contact with kids and colleagues, it’s no surprised that the seasons of fall and winter have become synonymous with the seasons of cold and flu. However, if you can effectively strengthen your immune system, the increase in these common illnesses doesn’t necessarily have to knock you off your feet. If a cold or the flu does sneak up on you, a little support for your immune system can go a long way to help minimize the uncomfortable symptoms of these nasty invaders.

There are a few simple things you can do to prevent illness and to minimize symptoms if you do get sick: Drink enough water and hydrating fluids, get plenty of rest, and keep your immune system healthy. A healthy immune system is fundamental to overall health. It is comprised of a complex network of tissues, organs, cells, and chemicals that occur naturally in our bodies.

When functioning well, the immune system works to protect the body from the bacteria and viruses we are exposed to every day. The common, uncomfortable symptoms associated with colds, flu and allergies (itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, mucus production, and scratchy throat) are a result of the immune system responding to germs that would potentially harm the body. Symptoms of decreased immune function include getting frequent colds, flu and infections. It’s important during this time of year to get restful sleep, engage in moderate exercise, and maintain a healthy weight.

Choosing the Right Supplements

Nutritional supplements are often considered when trying to support immune function. Scientific research indicates that multivitamins promote healthy immune function in most people. In 2001, a study conducted with adults over the age of 65 demonstrated that supplementing with a multivitamin containing trace minerals such as zinc and selenium and antioxidants like vitamin E could strengthen immunity, and a study in younger adults from 2002 supported the use of a daily multivitamin with trace minerals for healthy immune function.[1] Be sure that you choose a high quality pharmaceutical grade vitamin/mineral complex, such as Body Wise AM/PM Right Choice Vitamins and Minerals.

Research further indicates that herbs and homeopathy can support immune health, and nutritional supplements are available to support the immune system.

Ai/E10 is a powerful antigen-infused bovine colostrum/whey extract designed to provide potent immune system support. Plus, the Ai/E10 blend contains immunoglobulins (antibodies), growth factors, various proteins, and enzymes indicated for supporting and strengthening the immune system. Immune factors can help balance and support a healthy immune system. Body wise has three powerful products that support the immune system: AG-Immune®, NK-Immune® and Relief® Spray.

See http://keepushealthy.com/general-nutrition-information/immune-health for more information on the immune system and how to keep it strong.

A friend from Canada sent me this article a few days ago, and while I don’t have any children of my own, this is an issue that is close to my heart each time I talk to a woman about lifestyle change. No child should be overweight in the year 2008. We know better. Just for a moment, I want you to pause and think of your kids. Are they overweight? Is one of them overweight? What hard decisions do you need to make today to give your child every chance for good health? Are they getting enough exercise? What kind of diet to they have? Are you giving them high-quality supplements addressing all their nutritional needs?

Today’s Family News
November 19, 2008

An alarming new study has found that obese children may have the arteries of someone more than three times their age, the Ottawa Citizen reported.

“This study is another red flag to people out there who are managing these kids, and to parents especially,” Dr. Geetha Raghuveer, a cardiologist and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, told Health magazine. “These kids not only have the risk factors – like high cholesterol and hypertension – but they also have damage to their arteries.”

A research team led by Raghuveer studied 70 obese children whose average age was 13. By comparing the fatty buildup of plaque in their carotid arteries to those of healthy children, she concluded that three-in-four had the arteries of a normal 45-year-old.

For Dr. Brian McCrindle, a professor of pediatrics and staff cardiologist at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, to learn that obese children could have such an advanced “vascular age” came as a surprise. “I thought they would be at increased risk, but I didn’t think that it would be that bad,” he told the Citizen.

Others see it differently. “If you’ve seen what’s on the menu for most school lunches, these findings are no surprise,” Dr. Michael Schloss, a heart disease prevention specialist at New York University, told the Associated Press.

“The time has come,” Schloss added, “to seriously deal with the issue of childhood obesity and physical inactivity on a governmental and parental level.”

The 34 boys and 36 girls all had risk factors such as obesity, abnormal cholesterol levels, or a family history of premature deaths from heart attack.

Raghuveer noted that while it is very rare for children to suffer heart attacks regardless of the risk, “it is very possible that these kids – especially the cohort of obese kids we’ve been seeing in the last decade or so – may grow up to be young adults who may well have premature angina or heart attack, even as early as their 30s.”

The study, said McCrindle, is “one more piece of evidence that if we don’t start taking this childhood obesity epidemic seriously, we’re going to wind up with health problems that could potentially swamp the whole health care system.”

“Some of these children may need [drugs] either because they’re not compliant to dietary changes or because they don’t respond,” Raghuveer said.

In 2005, Statistics Canada reported that between 1978 and 2004, the rate of overweight adolescents aged 12 to 17 more than doubled from 14 per cent to 29 per cent, while their obesity rate tripled, jumping from three per cent to nine per cent.

A while ago, on the advice of my doctor, I had a Dexa Scan and was disappointed that my results came back “borderline osteopenia.” Those of you who know me well know that I am an avid proponent of “alternative” therapies and nutritional supplements, and take 1500 miligrams of calcium as a part of my daily regimen. Of course, the first thing my doctor suggested was to get on one of the popular osteoporosis drugs (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, etc.). He said that he didn’t recommend one over the other – it depended on my choice of dosage, etc.

Because of my aversion to prescription medicine of any type unless absolutely necessary to save one’s life, I told my doctor that I would like to do some research before making a decision. So I got on the Internet to do some research, and that is how I found Vivian Goldschmidt and “Save Our Bones.” Vivian has researched osteoporosis, its causes and remedies and has put all the information in her book The Bone Health Revolution. In the book, she exposes a lot of the myths surrounding osteoporosis (it is not a “disease”) and the dangers of taking the remedies that we see advertised on TV and elsewhere. I didn’t know that these meds contain bisphosphonates, a chemical used in many cleaning products, that actually inhibits the growth of new bone tissue. Take a look at this FDA warning. Obviously, Sally Field isn’t telling us the whole truth about Boniva in that commercial!

In her book, Vivian also gives alternatives to prescription drugs in the prevention and control of osteoporosis, including diet and exercise. The information that I got from the book reinforced my decision to ignore my doctor’s advice and his recommendation to get on prescription drugs.

If you are concerned about bone health and considering getting on one of the foregoing drugs, or if you are already taking one of them, I urge you to take a look at Vivian Goldschmidt’s website there is plenty of free information, and you can order her book if you choose to.

For more information – go to Vivian’s website - Save Our Bones

In this inspired and engaging work, Mark Wickstrom shows how conflicting religious opinions derive not from contradictions in the Bible but from personal agendas that contradict the gospel of grace. He identifies the timeless truths, cultural norms, personal opinions, and random texts that suit personal agendas and may create divisions among the faithful. Read the Gospel of Grace to discover how to create deeper understanding and unity in faith communities large and small.

Dr. Mark Wickstrom is the Senior Pastor of Community Lutheran Church in Las Vegas, NV. In addition to having served churches in four denominations Mark has been a seminary instructor, conference speaker, church consultant and mission trip leader. He and his wife have four children.

“In the thirty years I have known Mark a consistent passion on his heart is that God’s work be relevant and energizing for those in the church. That is evident here in this work as he gives us a framework to understand our use of scripture.”

It will free you from illness and permit you to live those extras years without serious health problems. Remember how well you live is just as important as how long you live. No one wants to extend their life bed ridden and unable to care for themselves.

So that means keep active. Keeping active usually involves some sort of exercise. Many people find exercise distasteful and boring. Thus it is difficult for them to form the habit of exercise. But to be effective, exercise first has to be a habit, something you do regularly regardless of other demands on your time.

This does not mean you need to transform yourself from a couch potato to an Olympic athlete. You don’t have to run marathons or try to be a decathlon champion.

Adequate exercise involves three goals. The first is flexibility. By flexibility, we mean the amount of give that is in your tendons and ligaments. Flexibility is achieved by stretching exercises, which should be done before and after a workout.

The second component of an efficient exercise program is strength training to build muscle. Strength training is usually done against some kind of resistance. You can strength train by weight lifting, using Nautilus machines, and Stairmasters. Since muscle tissue requires more energy for daily maintenance a more muscular body burns more calories. When muscle tissue replaces flab and fat you look better. Muscle strength also protects you from injuries.

The third part of your program should be aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise conditions your heart. It also burns fat but does not do this until after the first fifteen minutes so if you are trying to lose weight you should schedule thirty minutes of aerobic activity. Typical aerobics are walking, running, swimming, tennis, etc.

When doing aerobics it is important to “be in oxygen.” This means that, for instance, if you are power walking, you should be able to carry on a conversation at the same time. This is the key to knowing if you are “in oxygen.” If you don’t have a companion to talk to, try singing while you walk.

Some activities combine aerobics with strength training. For example, riding a stationary bike is an aerobic activity, which builds muscle strength in your legs and thighs, but it also conditions your heart. A Stairmaster has the same effect. Rowing machines build upper body muscles and strengthen your heart as well.

You should start your program slowly and build up gradually. Begin with a fifteen-minute walk three times a week and work up to fifteen minutes a day. To be effective walking must be done briskly, swinging your arms at your sides. The leisurely pace of window-shopping or pushing a grocery cart does not yield results. Start with ten minutes on the rowing machine, Stairmaster or stationary bike and work up to twenty.

There is a wide variety of exercise tapes available if you want to work out at home in front of the TV. It doesn’t matter what choices you make. What is important is to follow the Nike slogan, “Just do it!” You may not enjoy the process but you will love the results.
