I’ve taken vitamins for as long as I can remember – Mom said I should. I didn’t really put a lot of thought into what I took, just popped that daily vitamin-mineral tablet on a fairly regular basis, shopping at the local drug store or occasionally at a health food store for the best bargains. The thing was, it didn’t seem to matter if I took them or not. As I grew to be more “chronologically advantaged” I found myself suffering from terminal afternoon slump, with no energy to do anything in the evenings when I got off work. Then someone introduced me to the Body Wise Right Choice AMs & PMs (vitamins and minerals). After a few weeks of taking them consistently and drinking lots of water, I noticed that my afternoon slump had all but disappeared, I was waking up feeling more refreshed, and just generally felt that I had more energy to do the things I wanted to do.

I’ve tried many different brands and types of nutritional supplements, most of which made absolutely no difference in the way I felt or the condition of my health. I have since found out that . . . . . .

All vitamins are not created equal

Up to 80 percent of us suffer nutritional deficiencies even after all the food we eat. As a result of imbalanced diets and processed foods high in sugar, salt, fat and carbohydrates, you may be satisfying your appetite but starving your body of the real nutrition you need to be wonderfully alive, alert and energetic.

Even a multivitamin that supplies 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals isn’t enough for two important reasons:

First, unless the nutritional supplement is made with biologically-active raw ingredients that are carefully cold processed to preserve their strength and manufactured without coatings that prevent your body from absorbing nutrients, the supplement may pass  through you with little or no benefit.

Second, recommended daily allowance levels were never intended to tell us the amount of these nutrients that produce optimal benefits. The recommended daily allowance only indicates the amount of these nutrients the average person requires to prevent debilitating diseases like scurvy.

If your vision of a healthy lifestyle aims at strengthening your immune system, boosting energy, being uplifted by a radiant feeling of well-being and staying active at any age, then it’s time for optimal nutrition.

You may not be aware that there are three different grades of nutritional supplements: Food Grade, Industrial Grade and Pharmaceutical Grade.

Take a look at the following percentages:

  • Food Grade = at best 99% pure
  • Industrial Grade = at best 99.9% pure
  • Pharmaceutical Grade = typically 99.999999% pure

This sounds minimal on its face; however, the difference between those percentages means that in a normal pill you could have 10 billion active molecules, and with food grade, out of that 10 billion you would have at least 100 million to one billion unknown contaminants that potentially could be highly dangerous or even poisonous. For instance, how many times have you seen liquid supplements with a listing of ingredients with no clue as to how much of each it contains? Hypothetically, they could include mercury, which can be highly toxic.

Food Grade

The regulations regarding food grade supplements are very lax, resulting in some truth in labeling law issues. Food grade just means that they have taken some actual food substance that has a known quantity of some ingredient and put it in a pill form. There is no guarantee as to bioavailability. Let’s use herbals as an example. In the instance of licorice root, the active ingredient is glycerinic acid. If the container says “licorice extract” and the word root is left out that could mean that it has the entire plant ground up. The actual amount of active ingredient is extremely little, if any.

Industrial Grade

In the instance of industrial grade supplements, there is no corollary between the size of the molecule and the percentile. To give an analogy, if you go outside and look at an oak tree, the entire oak tree is solid oak -100 percent oak. However, it is going to have a few things on it like fungus and things like that, so maybe it’s 99 percent oak, or maybe it’s 99.9 percent. But we all know that the tree is not the same all the way through and there are different grades of wood. High quality wood, low quality wood, etc.

The same is true with food grade, industrial grade and pharmaceutical grade products – we have to take them down to the molecular level. If you’ll allow me another analogy, when you are dealing with industrial grade (say calcium, for example), there may be a molecular size going all the way from a dot on a piece of paper to something the size of a house. It’s all calcium; however, the human body may absorb it best at the size of a car. The problem with industrial grade is this: it may be 99.9 percent all right, but one-third of the mix is dot-size, one third is car-size, and one third of is house size. So, how much of that 99.9 percent is actually available to the human body? You’re lucky if you get the one third that is the proper size to get into the cells, because some of the cars might get stuck to some of the houses and not be absorbed at all. If they do get absorbed through the gut lining into the blood stream now you have one third of the product floating in the blood stream. The problem now becomes this, maybe cars are not what can get into the cells at the cell receptor sites. They may not be the right shape, type, size or chemical structure to be absorbed on a cellular level. That’s why it is not as simple as it seems when someone says “Oh yeah, my products are real pure”. It’s not just purity and potency, but bioavailability that counts.

Pharmaceutical Grade

We know that pharmaceutical grade supplements are, from a molecular perspective, comparable to drugs. Everything about a pharmaceutical grade product is consistent through and through. The size of every molecule is equivalent within the mixture. If you are talking about pharmaceutical grade calcium, all of the molecules will be the same size so it will be absorbed evenly and directly every time it is utilized. – you know exactly what the response will be. With industrial grade or a food grade, there will be variances in the size of the molecules, not only within that product, but with lot-to-lot variances. You never have any guarantee.

Additionally, the highest quality products on the market have almost no moisture content. That’s the standard for drugs – less than 1 percent moisture content. What this means is that if the label says a thousand milligrams of a certain ingredient in a pill, how did the manufacturer come to that conclusion? It is decided by weight. Accordingly, if 1 percent of the pill is moisture, approximately 10 milligrams of the substance have been lost to moisture. So you are only getting 990 milligrams of the ingredient, not a thousand. When drugs are made, each substance is weighed in a non-moisture state. The moisture content is extremely important when you are comparing food grade, industrial grade and pharmaceutical grade because many of the products are weighed after they have been put together.
